The SKY Swim Team is an affiliate of USA Swimming (USA) and is governed by USA Swimming rules and regulations. The team is open to children of all ages. The primary objective of the team is to train swimmers for competitive swimming. The emphasis in this training is to improve the stroke mechanics of the individual swimmer and to improve conditioning in order that each swimmer can progress toward their individual goals and compete successfully. While novices at any level are welcome to join the team, a minimum level of proficiency must be demonstrated by the swimmer.
SKY is committed to providing each swimmer with the opportunity to grow and mature through his or her accomplishments in competitive swimming. Emphasis is placed upon each swimmer reaching individual goals which will be determined by the coaches in consultation with the swimmers.
PRACTICE and INSTRUCTION
The swim team holds practice six days per week (Saturdays excluded) at the Bowling Green High School Swim pool. Swimmers are divided into groups based upon level of proficiency and age, as determined by the coach. While best times are taken into consideration, stroke proficiency, endurance and age are evaluated before a child is advanced to another group.
LITTLE DIPPERS
The Little Dippers is a “Learn to Swim” program offered from August to October. The group is designed to teach children the skills to swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke. Each swimmer will be get 8 ½ hour lesson (2 per week) during those months. Any swimmers who achieve swimming 25 yards of backstroke and freestyle will be moved to the Red Group.
RED GROUP
The RED GROUP must be able to swim the length of the pool using two of the competitive swim strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, or freestyle). These swimmers work on learning stroke drills and techniques only.
WHITE GROUP
The WHITE GROUP is for our younger swimmers and newer older swimmers. These swimmers work on conditioning and stroke techniques. Swimmers must be able to swim solid 50's and 100's. Swimmers will swim 3,500 to 4,000 yards per practice.
BLUE/SENIOR GROUP
The BLUE/SENIOR GROUP is for our top swimmers who have achieved multiple State “A” cuts or higher. These swimmers work on conditioning and strength training. Swimmers will swim 5,000 to 7,000 yards per practice.
ATTENDANCE
While there is no required attendance at practice sessions, it is recommended that each child try to attend a minimum of three practices per week. The coaches feel that a swimmer cannot maintain a conditioning level and expect to reach faster swim times without regular attendance of at least three swim practices per week.
